What size should my source image be?

Any size works, but square images (1:1 aspect ratio) produce the best favicons. A 256×256 or larger source image is recommended for crisp results.

What's the difference between the three sizes?

16×16 is used in browser tabs, 32×32 for taskbar/dock icons and retina tabs, and 48×48 for Windows site shortcuts and other larger displays.

How do I add a favicon to my website?

Add this to your HTML <head>: <link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32.png">. Repeat for each size.

Does this generate .ico files?

This tool generates PNG favicons, which are the modern standard. Most browsers prefer PNG favicons. For legacy .ico support, you can use the 16×16 PNG as a base.
